A Girly Girl Nursery on a Budget

I absolutely love designing and decorating rooms for little kids! Until recently, though, I had really only done boys rooms. Now, don't get me wrong, I love decorating for my boys! However, when we found out we were having a little girl, I was ecstatic to be able to plan a girly space. Obviously, years of ideas started flowing through my head, and it was a little overwhelming narrowing down my design plan.

One of the most difficult aspects was trying to figure out how to achieve the look I wanted on a budget that worked for us. Because we were essentially starting fresh, we needed to purchase a crib, crib bedding, dresser, rocker, curtains, paint, and décor. The crib I initially fell in love with was more expensive than our budget for the entire room. I had visions of wainscoting, crown molding, and gorgeous floral wallpaper. However, the wallpaper alone was almost $500 a roll, and our budget for the entire nursery was $800. So, back to the drawing board I went! I ended up with the design board pictured below, and all within our set budget.
We are making progress, but still have a few more projects left! I can't wait to share the finished space with all of you!

Friday's Featured Space

I love how bright and fresh this nursery is!  The gorgeous rocker, window treatments, pictures, chandelier, and crib are amazing! :)  And the curtain panels are actually the same fabric we're using for Cole's crib sheet and a few other accessories in his nursery, Grass Trellis from Serena and Lily: http://www.serenaandlily.com/Fabric/Signature-Patterns-Trellis-Grass.

Such a happy, unique space! :)

Breaking Free

Yesterday I put together this collage for my facebook page.  Notice a theme? :)

As you can tell, I like blues, browns, and neutrals.  Maybe a little too much! ;)  And although some may say the "brown and blue" fad has passed, I still love the color scheme.  Always have, probably always will. :)  However, I am determined to break free from my addiction as I decorate Cole's nursery! ;)  I just keep looking at pictures of great navy spaces to bolster my courage, like this one from Rikshaw Design:  http://rikshawdesign.blogspot.com/2011/06/rikshaw-navy-nursery.html

I think I can, I think I can! ;)

Tuesday's Featured Nursery

I love this room!  The colors, furniture, curtains, rug, mirrors, and oversized frame are gorgeous!  The rocker throws me off a little bit, but it's still a room fit for a princess! :)

Monday's Featured Nursery

Today's nursery is a great example of how to successfully create a shared space for a boy and a girl, which is definitely not an easy task!  I love the oversized portraits, wall color, chevron rug, and custom scrabble letter names! :)

Friday's Featured Nursery

As my good friends already know, I'm not a huge fan of the tree murals that have become quite popular in nursery design.  It's just a personal preference...it doesn't mean that they can't be done well.  And today's nursery is a perfect example of an adorable tree mural!  I love how they combined the various shades of purple with aqua, green, chocolate brown, and white.  This is such a happy space! :)

Wednesday's Featured Nursery: Breaking the Rules

The fashion and interior design worlds are full of "do" and "don't" lists.  And while there are some "don'ts" that I will definitely never do, I believe there are some rules that can certainly be broken. :)  I recently read this advice on a nursery blog, "Whatever you do, don't do baby blue for a boy's nursery or pastel pink for a girl's nursery."  I have to disagree!  Although it may be the traditional route, why can't you do blue for a boy and pink for a girl?  Design is all about doing what you love, not what someone else tells you that you should love.  And while there are guidelines that can help you find the perfect balance between good design and your personal preferences, this is one piece of advice that I will never give someone.  We went with baby blue in Blake's nursery, and I still love it!  In my opinion, if you want a pastel pink nursery for your baby girl, then go for it!  :)  In that spirit, here's an example of a gorgeous pastel pink nursery for all of my fellow rebels. ;)  For more pictures and details, visit: http://mydesigndump.blogspot.com/2010/05/pink-navy-nursery.html.

What do you guys think? :)

Saturday's Featured Nursery

Although I tend to gravitate towards brighter colors, this neutral nursery is lovely, soft, and feminine.  There are so many different details to love, and there are pops of color throughout the room to keep it interesting.  The artwork says it all: LOVE! :)

If you like it as much as I do, you can vote for it as project of the week at Project Nursery.  Just use the link below and hit the 'Like' button.  You can also see more pictures and details of this amazing room!  http://projectnursery.com/projects/evangelines-nursery/

Thursday's Featured Nursery

Today I'd like to feature a beautiful nursery that is very near and dear to my heart.  My sweet friend, Jessisca, was admitted to the hospital this morning, and I'm hoping to hear news of little Sophia's arrival anytime soon! :)

Tim and Jessica are renting and were not allowed to paint the nursery, much to Jessica's dismay. :)  However, they brightened the room with pops of color in shades of pink and aqua.  The nursery was completed on a small budget - all of artwork in the room is DIY.  Lots of love went into this nursery, and it shows!

Each day I'll be sharing a different nursery that has caught my attention.  If you have a space that you'd like to see featured, please email me with pictures and details: brookelynntash@hotmail.com.
